He went on to write regularly for the magazine I used to run, often supporting his stories with his own photographs. In the years since, our conversations have continued in a looser but no less interesting way: a chair made from recycled pallet wood; a journey through Nepal; a conversation with artisans as they work by hand; a place or person he has encountered before the rest of us see the frame.

I have always been a huge fan of Nipun’s photography, although I suspect that, with his work, the photograph is only one part of the encounter. What are the things that do not make it into the frame or onto paper? What is your unpublished layer?

NP: It’s a very interesting question, and I have to think about it. You got me.

I often think about this in terms of proximity. As a documentary photographer, it is notoriously difficult to photograph the people closest to you—your own family, or your own people. I think it is the same with writing also.

With the people closest to you, you already have a relationship. It existed before you were doing all this, before you were writing or photographing. For me, it is easier to go to another city, already have an email conversation with an architect or someone connected to a story, introduce myself as a new person, take permission and photograph.

So in that sense, it is easier. But a lot of everyday things are missed out.

Sometimes, with people closest to you, the relationship is already going on in a certain way. You cannot suddenly enter it as a photographer. You cannot suddenly say: now I am documenting this. That makes it difficult. I think that is one part of the unpublished layer.

The other part is the everyday itself. A lot of things that are around us all the time are not looked at carefully because they are so close. They do not always feel like “stories”, but they are important.

Has there been a time when photographing or publishing something felt insufficient, or even wrong? What are your limits of documentation?

NP: As long as documenting something teaches or evokes a thought in the people reading it, I am okay. But there has to be basic humility and respect. If we cross beyond that, I do not think it should be done.

In architecture photography, for example, I am sometimes told not to photograph a certain part of a building because it is not clean, or because the architect does not want it seen. But sometimes that is exactly the part I am interested in.

One thing I always do is photograph the toilets of an architect’s work. It can be a very intimate, revealing photo of a building.

But the question is not whether something should be hidden or exposed. The question is whether showing it adds something to the understanding of the work. If it is only to make fun of something, or to show something without care, then I do not think that is right.

For me, documentation has to come with responsibility. It has to be useful in some way—not necessarily in a practical sense, but useful in making people think more deeply about what they are looking at.

Because you are trained as an architect, and you also work with communities, how do you decide when to observe, when to intervene, and when to step back? Do you see your role as a photographer as more participant than observer?

NP: It depends on where I am and what I am photographing. For me, the boundaries are blurred.

A lot of times, I go as an architect and observe as a photographer. For example, in the Madhya Pradesh Tourism project that we are working on, we are going to villages and understanding architectural typology and culture. I am visiting as an architect, but I am using photography as a tool to observe and reflect.

In other places, photography becomes the first perspective I have. I was in Sri Lanka recently looking at Carl Pruscha, the Austrian architect, and his work through my lens.

This always reminds me of something I read about Gandhi. There was an international photographer, Margaret Bourke-White, who came to photograph him at his ashram in Ahmedabad. As I remember it, Gandhi put a condition: she herself had to spin the charkha before taking his portrait. She wanted to photograph him at work, and he wanted her to come and experience the work first, then take the photo.

I always feel that even as a photographer, I want to build a genuine relationship first. I cannot have a hard boundary between me and the people or places I am photographing. Actually, “subject” is also not the right word. It is more like a collaborator—the building or the people I am working with.

I always try to know a person first, and then go beyond, and then take permission to photograph. With that, sometimes I miss very amazing candid moments. But I think it is important to give that respect to the person being photographed, or the place being photographed.

That is why I do not really work on quick-turnaround assignments. It is more like visiting a place, experiencing it, and then deciding to photograph.

Being an architect is also a blessing because it gives me a chance to observe, reflect and sometimes participate. But it is always case by case.

From your experience on both sides—as someone who photographs and writes about architecture, and as someone also involved in design—what role does architecture media play in shaping how buildings are understood after publication?

NP: Media has a big role to play.

A lot of magazines and online publications work directly from the media or PR folders of architects and their projects, and take it as it is, rather than questioning it critically. I think that is something we need to look at.

I have also seen great examples where it has not been done that way. I remember photographing for the Aga Khan Awards, where I went to Sri Lanka to photograph a school and had a proper checklist. I had to look for each and everything the architect had suggested, and cross-verify it. There was even one line that said: look for cracks in the building. Look at how people are interacting with it.

I found cracks. I photographed them. That level of scrutiny is rare, but it is what good documentation looks like.

In India, a lot of this is now PR-driven. I get multiple emails from different PR organisations, and the title is almost always the same: “Exploring an authored article for my so-and-so client.” Then it has the whole media folder in it.

But I can also think from the media side, being part of the journalism circle. It takes time and real investment to give proper attention to a project. At the moment, everything has to be churned out very fast. So it is a difficult time for media as well. I remember in Muzaffarnagar in 2015, when I first met Raisu Chacha and his wife. They were standing on a staircase with no balustrade. It was only the staircase in their courtyard. That was the time their house was inaugurated.

When I went back one or two years later, the staircase had a handrail added. But Raisu Chacha was no more. Only his wife was there.

So I look at these little additions. I also look at the posters on the wall, because posters always display aspirations.

A lot of times, division is also a way to look at how a house has evolved. When we think of incrementality in design, we generally think of how a house will grow—vertically or horizontally. But the other way to look at it is how the house will be divided.

When families grow larger and the area is restricted, the house gets divided between brothers or sisters. Sometimes it starts with a curtain in the centre. After some years, it becomes a wall.

If the users are the same, I also look at how the children are growing. In Muzaffarnagar, a lot of kids were born in the relief camps—so they and the buildings came into the world at the same time.

In public buildings, especially government-owned ones in India, it is different. One bureaucrat can decide to paint over all the stone walls, and that is gone. Never to be seen again.

I am interested in looking at change both through a photographer’s eyes and an architect’s vision.

From the places and communities you have been working with recently, where do you think architecture is being tested most quietly—not in the most visible projects, but in everyday practice?

NP: In the places I work, two things are happening simultaneously that fascinate me.

One is that more people are realising the importance of earth-based, non-toxic materials, and learning from techniques that existed before but suddenly stopped. There is a real attempt to revive building crafts and the culture around them that was nearly lost. We have the last generation of building artisans and craftsmen.

Parallel to that, we are in the middle of a revolution in artificial intelligence and cutting-edge technology. I really see a future where both of these things are worked together as complements.

I have already seen the gap in student juries. A student shows one rough sketch, and then suddenly a very photorealistic render. What is in between? That missing gap is important and nobody is talking about it.

Generally, technology is used by high-end builders, for mass housing, or at very large scales. But if it can be brought into community-centric projects, into work with earth-based materials and artisans, something interesting can happen.

We recently collaborated with the Digital Craft in Architecture programme at Oxford Brookes, where we used mixed reality to work with shallow dome makers in Bhopal. It was a perfect collaboration between craft and tech, where one was supporting and not replacing the other.

Architecture will be impacted by AI a little later than some other fields, but it will be impacted. The question for me is: how do we bring together building craft, community knowledge and new technology, without losing the relationships and processes behind them?

Dome artisan Azad Singh works on a brick dome, keeping his mixed reality headset pushed up on his forehead.
